Families with an upright monument may choose to have a flowerbed located directly in front of the monument. In accordance with the Cemetery By‑law, flowerbeds:
- Must be no wider than the monument, and
- May extend up to 15 inches from the front of the monument
Flowerbed cut‑out and soil preparation
- First‑time flowerbed cut‑out: Cemetery staff can cut the flowerbed and prepare the soil at no charge.
- Subsequent years: A fee applies for cemetery staff to re‑cut and prepare the flowerbed for planting.
Flowerbed maintenance and planting services (optional)
For families who are unable to plant or maintain their own flowerbeds, optional flowerbed services are available. This service includes:
- Preparing the flowerbed
- Planting annual flowers
- Weeding and watering from June through the end of August
Planting restrictions
To maintain safety and consistency across cemetery grounds:
- Flowers with thorns, such as roses, are not permitted
- Fast‑spreading plants, such as forget‑me‑nots or lily‑of‑the‑valley, are not permitted
- Shrubs are not permitted at Williamsburg Cemetery
To confirm whether shrubs are permitted at other Kitchener cemeteries, please contact the cemetery office.
Watering‑only option
If you already maintain your own flowerbed, you may request a watering‑only service, with cemetery staff watering your flowerbed from June through the end of August.
Order deadline
The cemetery office accepts flowerbed service orders from February until April 30.
Flowers and decorative items
Artificial flowers
- Saddle wreaths placed on top of upright monuments are permitted year‑round
- Circle wreaths on tripod stands and bouquets of artificial flowers are permitted from Thanksgiving weekend until April 15
Fresh flowers
Fresh flowers placed in vases, flower sprays, or bouquets will be removed once they become withered.
