Mount Hope Cemetery
Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery a significant municipal cemetery located in the downtown core at 175 Moore Avenue, Kitchener.
In 1868, the Town of Berlin purchased land from the original owner, John Hoffman, to establish a municipal cemetery. Originally known as Greenbush Cemetery, the site has served the community for generations. In 1958, the City of Kitchener assumed responsibility for its operation, and the cemetery became known as Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery. It remains the City’s oldest active cemetery, with records dating back to the late 1700s.
Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery is directly adjacent to Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery, with the boundary dividing the two properties. Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Kitchener, while Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Waterloo. Together, the two cemeteries reflect the shared history of the area and the longstanding importance of municipal cemetery services in both communities.
Due to its age and heritage, Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery contains a number of distinctive historic memorials, including angel statues, obelisk monuments, and limestone markers. Many prominent figures from Kitchener’s history are buried there. Visitors interested in learning more about these individuals and the cemetery’s history can explore the Mount Hope Walking Tour Booklet.
The cemetery is also home to an important War Memorial, which recognizes and honours those who served. As both an active cemetery and a place of remembrance, Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery continues to provide a respectful setting for commemoration, reflection, and connection to the community’s history.
Mount Hope Cemetery is an active cemetery with cremation lots (flat markers only) available for sale. Burial services are conducted.
