Kitchener: Cemeteries

Walk to Remember and Butterfly Release

Kitchener Cemeteries, in partnership with Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO), hosts an annual Walk to Remember and Butterfly Release - an event that is held to support the healing process for those who have lost loved ones.

Next year's event date is Sunday Sept. 9, 2018.

Registration, butterfly pick-up, refreshments and social time run from 1-2 p.m., followed by the opening ceremony, and distribution of prizes. The butterfly release will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Walk to Remember through the Trillium Woods trail. Participants will also be invited to add the names and photos of their loved ones to the "wall of memories."

The butterflies are purchased from Greenway Blooming Centre, and are tagged by Monarch Watch, an educational outreach program based at the University of Texas. Monarch Watch engages citizen scientists in large-scale research projects. The program produces real data related to conservation issues.

Proceeds from the sale of the butterflies for the butterfly release and walk will allow the BFO to continue offering community grief support to families through development and enhancement of programs and services. Please note, butterflies are not available for purchase at this event. Pledges for the walk will be graciously accepted during the event.
